CHAIRMAN’S REPORT TO ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

WILLINGHAM VILLAGE HALL

November 4th 2013

Once again the Village Hall has had an excellent year during which we have made improvements to the facilities and decoration in the Hall and have organised a number of successful fundraising and social events.
The Annual Autumn Fayre, held in November, was once again a very successful event, with support from stallholders and villagers alike.

In December we organised a Christmas Floral Art making workshop attended by 20 villagers. This was a lovely seasonal event and was enjoyed by all. This made a small profit and was to encourage use of the hall and the sharing of skills.

In February we organised a filming of the family film ‘Despicable Me 2’. Unfortunately this was not well attended and we made a loss.

In April  we organised another successful  St Georges night dinner which, with the help of a number of villagers not on the committee, was a great night of English food and entertainment. Sausages and Maypole dancing are obviously a good combination!!

Improvements to the Hall
In April 2012 we installed a new boiler, hoping that this would improve heating. There had been some problems with this and in May last year we concluded our next major project will be to replace the pipework and radiators and we fundraised for this as well as seeking grant aid for this big project.
However unfortunately we didn’t get the grant. In the meantime we looked at an alternative plan of insulating the roof and the walls to stop heat escaping. Unfortunately this option proved too costly and would have involved the wood cladding being removed from the ceiling. We therefore reverted to the plan of replacing the pipework and radiators. Fortunately due to all the fundraising we had done we now had enough to achieve this without grant aid and we hope the work was done over the summer ready for this Autumn with much of the work and all of the project management being done by Simon Woodhead who did an excellent job keeping the costs down and getting it done in a short timescale.
We then got the hall redecorated. So not only is it warmer but it looks really lovely.
Externally committee member Margaret Martin has done an excellent job with the small garden area making look very neat and colourful. We have also had the front walls topped with coping stones which has further improved the look of the Hall.

Use of the Hall
For the last 3 years a grant from the Parish Council enabled us to reduce and keep the hourly rates we charge to hire the hall affordable for local organisations and private hire. This has continued to prove successful. We regularly monitor this and total receipts from hire charges are not significantly reduced and the hall is in constant use in the evenings during the week. We’ve had a continued increase in private hire events.
Local organisations continue to enjoy use of the hall including the new Willingham band and the local group Wilko. Brownies, Sturton Guides, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers all meet weekly and monthly bookings from Friendship and WI keep up the use along with seasonal use fron Twinning and their drama production.
The regular monthly coffee mornings that we started in May 2012 year have been popular and will continue and we are open to new ideas of how to use the hall.
I would like to thank the Parish Council and other villagers for their ongoing support.

The Committee
I think we are so lucky in Willingham that we continue to have a fantastically committed committee. Attendance at meets is excellent and everyone helps out at events and supports in numerous different ways and I would like to thank you all.
We are very lucky to have gained a new bookings clerk Ann Cragg who has already proved herself to be very efficient and enthusiastic. Many thanks to Carol Webster for filling in over the last year.
All in all it has been another great year for the Village Hall. We continue to provide a community venue which is accessible and available to the community and to promote events which foster the great community spirit that we already have in this village.
